口腔顔面痛 (Orofacial Pain) と、口腔内科 (Oral Medicine) は、両方ともADA (American Dental Association 米国歯科医師会) 公認の、歯科医療の専門分野の一つです。
日本ではあまり知られていませんが、アメリカでは補綴科 (被せ物や入れ歯の専門)や、歯周病科と同列に、専門分野の一つとして認識されています。

Oral Medicine experts work at the intersection of dentistry and medicine. The field is often viewed as a non-surgical dental specialty that includes diagnosis, physical evaluation, and therapeutic management of medically related oral disorders.

Oral medicine specialists treat a wide variety of conditions of the face and oral cavity including oral mucosal diseases, orofacial pain conditions, temporomandibular disorders (TMJ/TMD), disorders of the salivary glands and dry mouth, oral complications related to cancer treatments, and may also provide dental care for patients with complex medical problems.

Patients are often referred from throughout the health care system by practitioners in various fields, including:

口腔顔面痛の専門分野では、口腔顔面痛疾患の予防、診査、診断、治療、およびリハビリテーションを行います。これら疾患は、術後疼痛、悪性腫瘍に関連する痛み、または顎関節症、神経障害性疼痛、頭痛のような痛みを主症状とする症候群など、多様な状態が原因で痛みや関連症状が生じます。

The specialty of Orofacial Pain is concerned with the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of orofacial pain disorders. Such disorders may have pain and associated symptoms arising from a discrete cause, such as postoperative pain or pain associated with a malignancy, or may be syndromes in which pain constitutes the primary problem, such as TMJ disorder pain, neuropathic pains or headaches.

The diagnosis of painful syndromes relies on interpretation of historical data; review of laboratory studies, imaging, behavioral, social, and occupational assessment; interview and examination by the orofacial pain specialist. The orofacial pain specialist serves as a consultant to other dentists and physicians but is often the principal treating health care provider and may provide care at various levels, such as direct treatment, prescribing medication, prescribing rehabilitative services, performing pain relieving procedures, counseling of patients and families, direction of a multidisciplinary team, coordination of care with other healthcare providers and consultative services to public and private agencies pursuant to optimal healthcare delivery to the patient suffering from a painful disorder.
